The Valley Song project explores the complexities of dual national identity of the Bay Area Israeli American community through the eyes of The Valley Song, an Israeli singing group.
The portraits capture the group’s members in their chosen spaces around the Bay Area. These portraits are paired with lyrics from well-known Israeli songs that many Israelis hold dear, which take on new meanings when sung in a different time and place. Their lyrics may hold inconvenient truths or provide comfort in turbulent times.
Members of the Valley Song are balancing their dual identities, trying to keep their cultural roots while also fitting into a new society. In the wake of October 7th war, some are rethinking their life choices, or adapting to new realities in various ways. This project aims to start a conversation about the past and present, home and abroad, reflecting the strong cultural and emotional ties that stretch across continents.
